As I have written in a previous post, one of the most powerful tools for a
successful job search is using Web 2.0 tools like LinkedIn to help spread that wide job search net.
So I thought I would take a look at what experts say on how to maximize LinkedIn and see what I have missed:
- Fully complete your profile: Check
- Edit profile to claim vanity URL: Check
- Make profile publicly available: Check
- Allow profile to be viewed in search engines: Check
- Optimize job titles: good idea — need to work on this
- Make connections: Check (101 and counting)
- Get recommendations: Check (9 and counting)
- Make recommendations: Check (7 and counting): I am pretty particular about giving recommendations and am pretty suspicious of someone with many, many recommendations — especially when there seems to be a correlation between recommendations made and recommendations received.
- Add personal photo: Check (updated)
- Add WordPress application: Check
- Fill out Contact Settings: Check (updated)
- Participate in the Q&A area: ask a question/answer a question: good idea
- Update at least every three months: Check (ongoing)
- Think carefully about keywords: hmmm; good idea
- Create or attend events to meet up with people in your network : I’m a bit shy, but I need to push my comfort level a bit
To be successful, working the LinkedIn profile has to be an ongoing project. Especially since on of my top priorities is to attract prospective employers and become a happily employed working stiff again.
