weight lossI started a medical weight loss program at Kaiser in September, and that certainly gives me something to focus on in the meantime. Perhaps this step of taking charge of my health is one of the reasons I still feel pretty good, despite losing my job.

Now I can focus on a different kind of loss

I am in the midst of the 16-week Optifast full meal replacement program and with the 960 calorie/day intake, plus the increase in exercise, I am losing weight at a very nice pace.  I was worried that the Optifast regimen (I call it the milkshakes and candy bar diet) would be too difficult to keep up but it has been surprisingly easy to follow.  I have become (at least for now) indifferent to food and can happily cook meals for Nita, as long as I stay away from things that might still call to me: Mexican food, cakes, and mmmmm cookies !

My pedometer is with always as I try to hit at least 6,000 steps/day.  I’ve even found some cool sites for walking ideas:

  • Walking for Fitness: part of about.com, this site has great recommendations on how to get started, how to track your mileage, best ways to walk and lose weight, gear review and more !  Plus, you can sign up for free and get tips in your email (something I normally avoid, but the information I get is quite good).
  • Google Map Pedometer: you can find this on other sites, but I like this version the best.  If you don’t have a pedometer, let Google figure out how much you have walked (or run, I suppose)

I’ve got a walking buddy and the weather has been pretty good so I am logging the miles.  But must Oakland be so hilly — especially my neighborhood?
